China and Japan are offering conflicting versions of an incident near a cluster of strategically sensitive islands in the East China Sea. According to the Chinese Coast Guard, a Japanese fishing vessel entered waters near the Diaoyu Islandsreferred to as the Senkaku Islands by Japanwithout authorization. China maintains sovereignty over the islands, though they are currently administered by Japan.
Japan's Coast Guard, however, stated that it intercepted two Chinese Coast Guard vessels as they approached the fishing boat and forced them to leave Japanese waters. The episode comes amid rising diplomatic tensions following remarks by Japans Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in November suggesting Tokyo might respond militarily if China attacked Taiwan. Beijing considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to unify it with the mainland.
The rhetoric between China and Japan has grown increasingly sharp, affecting daily life for people in both countries. Taiwan lies approximately 160 kilometers southwest of the Senkaku Islands.
A Chinese Coast Guard spokesperson, Liu Dejun, stated that Chinese vessels approached and warned off the Japanese fishing vessel for illegally entering Chinese territorial waters, adding that law enforcement measures were taken to defend Chinas claims. Liu urged Japan to halt any acts of infringement in the area.
The Japanese Coast Guard reported that its ships confronted the Chinese vessels shortly after they were seen entering Japanese waters on Tuesday morning. The patrol ensured the fishing boat's safety until the Chinese ships departed a few hours later.
Despite a 2008 agreement to jointly exploit resources in the East China Sea, tensions between China and Japan have intensified over the past fifteen years. The uninhabited Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands have become a recurring flashpoint. China has increased patrols near the islands, seemingly testing Japans resolve to defend them. Last year, Chinese government vessels were observed near the islands for a record number of days for the third year in a row, with unprecedented numbers of China Coast Guard ships operating in the area.
Before Tuesdays incident, the last recorded entry of Chinese ships into the waters surrounding the islands was on 16 November, which China described as a lawful patrol to uphold its rights and interests.
