Homeless individuals who are employed utilize Nottingham winter shelter

A local charity supporting homeless people reports that individuals with regular jobs have been using its emergency winter shelter in Nottingham before heading to work each day.

Emmanuel House operates a dormitory providing 30 temporary beds for men and women experiencing homelessness. The shelter accommodates those who can manage a large communal living space and assigns each guest a case worker to assist in finding long-term housing solutions.

The organization has observed an increase in visitors with complex challenges, including mental health issues, financial difficulties, and relationship problems.

Kelly Harrison, the accommodation coordinator at the shelter, explained that many guests have lost their homes for personal reasons but are determined to maintain their employment. "We've had delivery drivers, warehouse staff, laborers, and care workers," she said. "We try to admit them as quickly as possible so they can secure stable accommodation."

She also noted that some residents work very early shifts, leaving the shelter as early as 5:30 a.m., and the team works to accommodate their schedules.

Every guest is provided with both a case worker and a support worker to help navigate their situation and access necessary resources.

Izzy Harris, Emmanuel Houses new chief executive, emphasized that the aim is to transition people into safe, stable housing. She highlighted the essential role of the shelter, saying, "Without these 30 beds, many of these people would likely be on the streets."

The shelter continues to be a vital lifeline for those facing homelessness while maintaining employment, offering practical support and guidance to help them regain stability.
