Kyiv's new peace negotiations leader implicated in same corruption scandal as former official

Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Rustem Umerov as the new lead negotiator for Ukraines peace talks, replacing Andriy Yermak, who resigned following a corruption probe. Umerov, secretary of Ukraines National Security and Defence Council, is reportedly involved in the same scandal that led to Yermaks departure.

On Sunday, Umerov led high-level discussions in Florida with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, focusing on Ukraines security and future. While former Ukrainian defense officials described the talks as productive, Rubio emphasized that further work remains.

Umerovs appointment drew criticism from observers and media figures who accused Zelensky of favoring loyal allies over experienced diplomats. Bohdan Nahaylo, chief editor of Kyiv Post, suggested that the presidents choice reflects a prioritization of personal loyalty over professional competence, warning that sidelining career diplomats could harm Ukraines interests.

Umerov has faced scrutiny from Ukraines National Anti-Corruption Bureau over alleged property holdings in the US and potential ties to energy sector corruption, allegations he denies. Despite the controversy, he took part in discussions aimed at rebuilding Ukraine, preventing future aggression, and securing international support.

Following the Florida meetings, US officials, including Witkoff, are expected to travel to Moscow for further negotiations. These talks coincide with a planned meeting between Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The discussions are seen as a crucial step in shaping a peace framework, including revisions to a previously leaked 28-point ceasefire proposal initially seen as favoring Russia.

Meanwhile, military activity continues in Ukraine. Russian strikes over the weekend resulted in at least six deaths and multiple injuries, including a drone attack on Kyiv. Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, while reports emerged of a Panama-flagged vessel allegedly transporting Russian oil being sunk off Senegals coast.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts with European partners to apply pressure on Russia rather than Ukraine. Trump commented on the situation, noting the potential for a deal while acknowledging the challenges posed by corruption scandals in Kyiv.

Additionally, Zelensky appointed former US ambassador Oksana Markarova as an adviser on reconstruction and investment, a role focusing on post-war prosperity in Ukraine.
