Map: Met Office issues 'danger to life' warning for heavy rain forecast this week

Significant rainfall is predicted across much of the United Kingdom on Monday and Tuesday, with Wales expected to face particularly intense downpours and severe storms. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for south Wales until midnight on Monday, indicating a potential threat to life. Forecasts suggest nearly a months worth of rain could fall within a single 24-hour period.

In addition, yellow warnings are in effect for parts of south-west and north-west England, as well as central and northern Wales, remaining active until 3am on Tuesday. South-west Scotland is under a similar warning until 9pm on Monday. Rainfall in higher areas of south Wales could reach around 120mm, while other regions may see 20-40mm, potentially reaching 80mm in elevated areas.

Flood and Landslide Risks

The British Geological Survey noted that such rainfall amounts in Wales have previously caused landslides. Both natural slopes and man-made infrastructure could be impacted, particularly where the ground is already saturated. Disruptions to roads and railways are likely, especially in locations with long diversion routes.

Official Forecasts

Met Office chief forecaster Rebekah Hicks stated: Heavy rain will affect south Wales from late Sunday into Monday. Highest accumulations are expected on elevated ground, potentially reaching 100-120mm. Hills in the amber warning zone may receive 60-80mm, while lower areas could see 20-40mm. Wider yellow warnings cover southwest and northwest England, central and northern Wales, and southwest Scotland, where disruptions are also possible.

On Tuesday, two yellow warnings will remain active, covering a broad region.

Flood Alerts

Natural Resources Wales has issued 38 alerts, advising residents to be ready for potential flooding. The Environment Agency has posted five flood warnings where flooding is expected and 44 alerts indicating possible flooding.

Five-Day Weather Outlook

  • Monday: Windy with heavy, persistent rain, particularly in south Wales and northwest England. Local flooding possible. Colder in the northwest, milder elsewhere.
  • Monday Evening: Cloudy, wet, and windy. Conditions gradually improving with drier spells and easing winds later.
  • Tuesday: Clear periods with scattered showers in the south and west, potential hail and thunder. Mostly dry with sunny spells elsewhere. Temperatures near seasonal average.
  • Wednesday: Mainly dry with sunny spells and a few isolated showers.
  • Thursday and Friday: Rain returning in spells, with occasional brighter intervals.
