Marine killed in tactical vehicle accident identified by Corps

The Marine Corps has confirmed the identity of a Marine who tragically lost his life Wednesday during a tactical training vehicle accident at Camp Pendleton, California.

Pfc. Tanner F. Rubio, 21, passed away on December 3 in the incident. Officials emphasized that the accident was not connected to the ongoing Exercise Steel Knight 25, which is currently being conducted at various military installations in California and Arizona. Further details about the circumstances of the accident have not been released.

Rubio, originally from Dixon, California, enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2025 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, stationed at Camp Horno within Camp Pendleton.

The loss of Pfc. Rubio is deeply felt throughout the 1st Marine Division, said Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage, commanding general of the division. He will be greatly missed, and his dedication and service to his country will always be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family during this difficult time.

The Marine Corps has stated that the incident is under active investigation.

I MEF, the Marine Corps largest Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), comprises primarily the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group.
