Jeremy O. Harris, a celebrated U.S. playwright and actor recognized for his Tony-nominated work Slave Play, was taken into custody in Japan on suspicion of carrying the psychedelic drug ecstasy, officials reported on Saturday.
Authorities at Naha Airport on Okinawa, Japans southern island, arrested Harris on November 16 for allegedly violating customs regulations by carrying 0.78 grams (0.0275 ounces) of crystalized MDMA in a tote bag, according to Tatsunori Fukuda, spokesperson for Okinawa Regional Customs.
Harris, 36, had departed from Londons Heathrow Airport two days prior and transited through Taiwans Taoyuan International Airport before arriving in Naha for tourism. Okinawa is known for its warm, year-round climate and popular resort destinations.
Fukuda stated that Harris was immediately taken into custody by Tomishiro police, who subsequently submitted a criminal complaint to the Naha District Prosecutors Office for investigation and potential indictment. Officials noted that no additional drugs were discovered in Harris luggage, suggesting the MDMA was intended for personal use. Details regarding any statements from Harris remain undisclosed.
Japanese criminal law permits authorities to detain suspects for up to 23 days before formal charges are filed. Pretrial detention may be extended if the suspect exercises the right to remain silent or contests the allegations, a practice often criticized as "hostage justice." Convictions for drug smuggling in Japan can carry lengthy prison sentences.
Harris first gained prominence with Slave Play, which he wrote during his time at the Yale School of Drama. The play premiered off-Broadway in 2018, sparking debate for its exploration of race, class, and sexuality. It later moved to Broadway in 2019 and received a Tony nomination for Best Play. A limited Broadway revival occurred in December 2021.
Beyond theatre, Harris has appeared in minor acting roles, including cameo appearances as himself on the rebooted Gossip Girl, and has co-produced episodes of HBOs series Euphoria.
