A local rugby organization is partnering with schools to enhance students' communication abilities and motivation. The Bristol Bears Foundation has teamed up with the Cabot Learning Federation to engage pupils through daily interactive workshops.
At City Academy in Redfield, students are combining learning with rugby activities, giving them a practical and fun approach to personal development. Theresa Bickell, the coordinator for the Bear in Mind programme, described how rugby has helped her experience a "family-like connection," emphasizing that this sense of belonging is central to the project.
The initiative targets students who may find conventional school routines challenging, offering multiple programmes run by the Bristol Bears Foundation. Among these are the Bright Sparks programme, supporting young people from economically disadvantaged areas, and Bear in Mind, designed to assist girls aged 14-16 in overcoming various challenges.
Harry Randall, scrum-half for both Bristol Bears and England, highlighted the benefits of rugby in developing teamwork, communication, and personal drive, noting that these qualities are valuable beyond sports.
Students involved in the programme have reported significant personal growth. Mariam explained that the experience teaches resilience and adaptability: "You need to try everything because you never know what opportunities may come your way. It helps you gain confidence and social skills, preparing you for the future." Fellow student Alethea added, "Being able to communicate effectively is important for jobs and interviews later in life."
The scheme includes a Bristol Bears Foundation staff member stationed at City Academy five days a week to mentor students and facilitate the various programmes.
