Scottish Labour frontbencher resigns due to connections with sex offender

Scottish Labour politician Pam Duncan-Glancy has resigned from her position on the party's frontbench following acknowledgment of a "significant lapse in personal judgment" due to her connection with a convicted sex offender.

Duncan-Glancy, who represents the Glasgow region and served as Labour's education spokesperson, submitted her resignation after reports revealed she had ongoing contact with Sean Morton, a former Labour councillor convicted in 2017 for possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography.

In her resignation letter to party leader Anas Sarwar, she admitted to making "a serious error in professional judgment" and stated: "As a direct result of this mistake, it is no longer possible for me to continue in my current role."

Sarwar accepted her resignation, noting her recognition of the error and acknowledging that she had taken the correct step in stepping down.

A spokesperson for Scottish Labour confirmed: "Pam Duncan-Glancy has done the right thing by resigning, and we consider the matter concluded."

Duncan-Glancy will continue to serve as a Labour MSP.

Paul O'Kane has been appointed as the new Scottish Labour Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education and Equalities.

Sean Morton, the former councillor for Lochabers and Lhanbryde, was previously sentenced to unpaid work and placed on the sex offenders register after pleading guilty to possessing two indecent images of children. He claimed the images had been sent to him anonymously.
