US President Donald Trump is set to witness the formal signing of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda in Washington today, a move he describes as strengthening his reputation as a mediator.
The government in Kinshasa has accused Kigali of backing rebel groups in the eastern, resource-abundant regions of the DRC. Recent clashes have intensified just before the meeting, underscoring the challenges of achieving and sustaining peace, even with the US presidents involvement.
Meanwhile, negotiations over a Russia-Ukraine peace settlement remain stalled, and a ceasefire previously brokered between Cambodia and Thailand under Trumps mediation has already broken down.
An analyst told Semafors Africa desk ahead of the event, Bringing leaders to Washington to sign an agreement is the simpler part; the real test is maintaining peace afterward.
