Tasmania has introduced an additional reverse vending machine, part of a growing trend across the state. Since May 1, residents have returned 42 million containers at 45 collection points, with four more sites planned as part of the governments Recycle Rewards rollout.

Each returned bottle, can, or carton earns 10 Australian cents ($0.06), which can be claimed as a voucher for participating retailers or donated to charities and community organizations. Users can also manage their returns through a dedicated app, offering more flexibility in redeeming rewards.

A promotional video from TasRecycle and Tomra Cleanaway emphasizes that doubling recycling rates could prevent over 100 million containers from ending up in landfills. When everyone contributes, the impact grows rapidly, the announcement noted.

The latest machine was installed in October near Hobart, in the southern region of the island, according to Pulse Tasmania. Numerous other RVMs and depots are already operating throughout the area. TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley explained that Glenorchy was selected due to the communitys strong commitment to recycling.

The machines accept aluminum, plastic, glass, and steel containers ranging from 150 milliliters (5 ounces) to 3 liters (101 ounces). Similar recycling devices are being implemented globally, including in India, England, and the United States, providing hope in addressing the plastic pollution crisis.

While consumers reducing plastic use is essential, corporate responsibility in minimizing production and reusing materials remains crucial. Recycle Rewards aims to cut litter, promote a circular economy, protect waterways and beaches, and benefit residents.

By May, nearly 90% of Tasmanians lived within 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of a collection location. The programs website offers an interactive map detailing nearby recycling points, schedules, and accepted materials.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey praised the initiative, saying, Its a win for your wallet and a win for the planet. Recycle Rewards reduces litter, increases recycling, and supports our local community groups.
