China Reveals its Mysterious Submarine-Ship Hybrid

A newly surfaced image shows a Chinese trimaran vessel for the first time in public circulation, raising numerous questions about its intended function. Evidence suggests this craft may be capable of full or near-full submersion, hinting at a hybrid design blending features of surface ships and submarines.

The image, recently shared on social media, offers a profile view of the vessel in the water. While the photos exact date is unclear, it likely originates from the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou province, where satellite imagery has captured the vessel in recent months. Previously, only naval analyst H. I. Sutton had reported on the vessel, which had been hidden under tarpaulins in satellite photographs.

The black-painted vessel combines traits typical of both surface ships and submarines. Its streamlined shape initially suggested high efficiency, although this recent angle does not necessarily indicate peak performance as a primary design goal.

Submarine-like elements are more visible in this new view, including a possible rear propulsor that could indicate a pump-jet system. Pump-jets are quieter than traditional propellers and allow for stealthier long-distance travel. The vessel also features a sail resembling that of a submarine, potentially equipped with a snorkel or antenna mast. Whether the vessel is crewed or uncrewed remains unknown. If uncrewed, it could function as a hybrid between an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) and an uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV).

Other indications suggest the vessel might operate fully submerged. Depth markings on the sail and hull reinforce its hybrid submersible/surface design, offering stealth under water while maintaining efficiency on the surface.

Speculation about the vessels role includes it being an arsenal ship. The concept would allow an uncrewed, hard-to-detect platform to launch missileseither land-attack or anti-shipbefore submerging. Alternatively, it may serve as a mothership for drones, possibly VTOL types, or even carry special forces for operations in coastal or island areas. Another plausible explanation is that the vessel functions as a testbed for experimental maritime technologies, in line with Chinas history of developing bespoke naval platforms for research, evaluation, and training.

At present, the trimarans systems, armament, and operational crew remain unconfirmed. However, as additional images emerge, the vessels true capabilities and purpose may soon become clearer.
