Hundreds of bus drivers and engineers in Cambridge are preparing to strike during the Christmas period, according to union representatives. Unite confirmed that around 200 Stagecoach workers in the city turned down a proposed pay agreement that would reduce their overtime rates by 12% on weekdays and by 20% on weekends and public holidays.
The union announced that the planned strike days are 17, 20, 22, 24, and 27 December.
Unites general secretary, Sharon Graham, stated, "Stagecoach is generating significant profits and can afford a pay deal that does not cut overtime pay. Cambridge staff have our full backing to take strike action to secure fair compensation."
The union noted that Stagecoach reported operating profits of 97.3 million for the year ending April 2024, with total sales of 1.6 billion. While industrial action is scheduled, Unite emphasized that a resolution is still possible if the company presents an acceptable offer.
MP Simon Lightwood, minister for roads and buses, speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, urged both sides to resolve the dispute, saying, "Industrial action is harmful for business, for drivers, and for passengers. Stagecoach should negotiate with Unite promptly to avoid disruption."
