Boss says electric buses are a 'significant improvement'

A new fleet of 42 electric buses is set to begin service in the coming weeks, marking a significant advancement for transportation in Gloucestershire. Several of Stagecoach Wests new vehicles have already arrived at local depots, although they are not yet carrying passengers.

Chris Hanson, Managing Director of Stagecoach West, highlighted the improvements: "These buses are quieter, smoother, equipped with air conditioning, feature new seating, and include two wheelchair bays. They are a substantial upgrade compared to some of our current vehicles."

Gloucestershire County Council reported contributing around 3.5 million to the project alongside government support, with Stagecoach West investing an additional 17 million.

Hanson added, "This allows us to retire 42 of our oldest buses, and the difference is remarkable. In Gloucester, these buses will operate on routes 1 to Matson, 2 and 2A, while in Tewkesbury they will serve routes 71, T, 41, 42, and 43. The double-deck models will run on routes 94, 95, and 94X connecting Gloucester and Cheltenham."

The depots themselves have undergone renovations to support the new fleet. Hanson explained, "Upgrading the Gloucester depot to accommodate electric charging infrastructure has been challenging, but necessary to operate all the buses efficiently."

Currently, these electric buses will make up approximately 20% of Stagecoach Wests fleet in Gloucestershire. Plans are underway to transition to a fully electric fleet, a substantial leap from the current setup that may require establishing a new depot.
