Doctor aims to convert building into housing for NHS employees

A plan has been submitted to transform a historic 19th-century building, Hatherton House in Walsall, into shared accommodation aimed at NHS personnel. The proposal envisions 17 bedrooms within the former nursery, offering a mix of en-suite and shared facilities.

Sue Boden, a staff member of the Walsall NHS Trust who is submitting the application in a personal capacity, highlighted the shortage of high-quality housing in the local area as a motivation for the project.

The property, located on Hatherton Street within the Lichfield Street Conservation Area, was placed on the market earlier last year with an asking price of approximately 495,000.

The redevelopment plan includes six bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and 11 rooms sharing communal toilets and wash areas. Both floors will feature shared kitchens, and the site provides 14 car parking spaces.

Previously, Hatherton House had a distinctive polka-dot exterior from around 2013, which was restored to a traditional white facade in 2018. The building most recently served as offices for Skills Training UK.

The applicant confirmed that the external appearance will be preserved, with only minor and reversible modifications planned. The agent representing the project, En-plan, stated: "The works will positively contribute to the heritage asset by bringing it back into use and preventing further deterioration caused by neglect."

En-plan also noted that the scheme respects the buildings architectural style and heritage significance, while providing essential housing in a sustainable, town-centre location.

This report was compiled by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, which covers local councils and public service matters.
