The Eurostar network in Western Europe has unveiled plans to introduce up to 50 state-of-the-art double-decker trains across the U.K. and through the English Channel into continental Europe. The initiative, valued at 2 billion, includes an initial order of 30 custom-built trains from Alstom Group, with an option to expand by another 20 units.

These fully electric trains are designed to support Eurostar's goal of transporting 30 million passengers annually. They will be the first double-decker trains to operate in the United Kingdom. Each 200-meter trainset will accommodate 540 passengers, allowing 1,080 travelers per standard 400-meter formation that crosses the channel.

The trains will be compatible with the rail systems of all five Eurostar countries, enabling seamless international travel. The fleet expansion will also create 350 new jobs in England, with operations centered at the Temple Mills Depot in London.

Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave commented, "This order represents a significant step in realizing our growth strategy of reaching 30 million passengers. We are proud to introduce double-decker trains to the U.K. for the first time. The new Eurostar Celestia trains will deliver unparalleled comfort and a unique experience, with exciting features soon to be revealed. This is a golden era for sustainable international travel, and Eurostar is at the forefront."

Globally, electric rail is gaining momentum as an environmentally responsible alternative to short-haul flights. China is a leading example, rapidly expanding its high-speed network and pushing technological boundaries.

The first six of the new trains are expected to arrive in January 2031, with service commencing in May of the same year. This development highlights Europe's strong commitment to sustainable transportation and represents a major step forward in modernizing the rail network.
