New center for learning established to enhance skills of town's post-16 population

A transformative educational campus has been announced, aimed at expanding learning opportunities for young people in Thetford. The initiative, proposed by West Suffolk College in partnership with Breckland Council, seeks to address the town's shortage of post-16 education options.

Previously, teenagers in the area had to travel to Bury St Edmunds or Norwich to access further education. Nikos Savvas, CEO of the Eastern Education Group, which manages West Suffolk College, stated: "This campus will allow us to equip students with the skills demanded by local employers and provide clear career pathways."

Research conducted by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government highlighted that some areas of Thetford rank among the top 20% most deprived in England in terms of education, skills, and training. Mr Savvas emphasized: "By introducing hands-on vocational courses locally, we aim to strengthen the workforce, increase employment, and stimulate the local economy."

In a related development, West Suffolk College was recently recognized as one of ten specialized construction colleges across the UK. The designation comes with a share of a 100 million investment to enhance training for bricklayers, carpenters, roofers, and electricians.

South West Norfolk Labour MP Terry Jermy expressed his support for the project, saying he was "delighted" and highlighting the campus as central to unlocking Thetford's potential. Conservative councillor and Breckland Council leader Sam Chapman-Allen added: "This facility has long been needed and will allow young people to gain essential skills locally without traveling far."

The council confirmed that once planning and cost assessments are complete, it will explore the most effective way to secure funding for the project.
