On Monday afternoon, news finally confirmed what many had anticipated in Eugene: Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein is leaving to start his head coaching career. Stein has been hired by the Kentucky Wildcats shortly after the program parted ways with long-time head coach Mark Stoops.
A native of Kentucky, Stein was a top contender for the Wildcats position, and both sides acted swiftly to finalize the agreement. During his three-year tenure with the Ducks, Stein earned a reputation as a quarterback guru, guiding Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel to Heisman Trophy finalist status. While the 2025 finalists are yet to be announced, Dante Moore remains a potential candidate, though he may face stiff competition.
Although fans are disappointed to see Stein leave Oregon, many expressed excitement for his new opportunity leading his own team. Social media reactions on Monday included:
"Good for Stein. Hes earned this opportunity. Hope he does well." Geoff Schwartz (@geoffschwartz)
"I know Oregon fans are going to panic because Stein is leaving. And Tosh is likely gone also. If youre a successful program youre going to have assistant coaches take HC jobs. Lanning has hit home runs with all his hires. I would expect the same to replace these coaches." Geoff Schwartz (@geoffschwartz)
"Fire up the OC hot board for the most attractive offense job in the nation " @Genetics56
"So, Oregon will need 2 new coordinators after this season if the DC gets the Cal job. Time to go win the natty before they depart." @Genetics56
"Pay close attention to the Oregon fans who celebrate Stein leaving like he wasnt elite. CFP with no coordinators." Geaux Ducks (@GeauxDuck)
"I feel like this hire could age better than other high-profile SEC ones made in this cycle." Paolo Uggetti (@PaoloUggetti)
"My personal wish-list for how Dan Lanning fills the Will Stein vacancy? Promote RaShaad Samles to OC. Elevate Ross Douglas to co-OC and passing-game coordinator. Hire an elite QB coach. Bring on Chip Kelly as a senior analyst." Zachary Neel (@zacharycneel)
"Welcome home, Brian Hartline " Ducks fans
