Over 260,000 cases of shredded cheese sold across 31 U.S. states and Puerto Rico have been recalled due to concerns about potential metal fragment contamination, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall involves various shredded cheese products distributed by Great Lakes Cheese Co., which are sold under several private store brands. These cheeses are available at major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Aldi.
Included in the recall are different types of cheese such as mozzarella, Italian-style, pizza-style, as well as mozzarella and provolone, and mozzarella and parmesan blends.
The FDA has issued a Class II recall classification, meaning the products may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, according to their official site.
Health risks from ingesting metal fragments may include dental injuries, cuts or wounds in the mouth or throat, and damage to the intestine, such as lacerations or perforations.
