Town's Last Bank Closure Brings Hope for Cash Services

An MP has announced plans to meet with representatives from Cash Access UK, a non-profit organisation funded by leading high street banks, to explore options for maintaining cash services in a town in East Yorkshire. This follows Lloyds Bank's announcement that its branch on St Augustine's Gate, Hedon, will close on 28 January 2026, leaving the town without any banking facilities.

Graham Stuart, Conservative MP for Beverley and Holderness, emphasized the importance of retaining physical banking services for the community. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

Stuart has been advocating for a shared banking hub in the town, a space where multiple high street banks can offer essential services in areas affected by branch closures. A petition initiated by the MP has already gathered over 2,000 signatures.

Link, the organisation responsible for evaluating communities for banking hubs, initially recommended that services be provided through the town's Post Office, a solution Stuart deemed "unsuitable." After appealing the decision, Link agreed to reassess its recommendation.

"The positive outcome is that Link reconsidered," Stuart said, expressing hope for a beneficial solution for both residents and local businesses.
