National Highways has confirmed that tunneling for the Lower Thames Crossing is planned to commence in 2028. Discussions are underway to acquire one of the worlds largest tunnel boring machines to support the project.
The machine, capable of operating 60 metres beneath the River Thames, will construct a new roadway connecting Essex and Kent. This development also allows private sector funding to be secured for the remaining stages of construction.
Preparatory work will begin next summer at the northern tunnel entrance, marking the starting point for the tunnel boring machines route.
According to Matt Palmer, the executive director for the Lower Thames Crossing project at National Highways, the crossing is on course to be completed in the early 2030s.
The tunnel boring machine, with a diameter of 16.4 metres, will create one of the widest tunnels globally and establish the longest road tunnel in the United Kingdom. National Highways is currently inviting tenders from suppliers capable of constructing this massive machine.
