Residents in Wiltshire may see their waste collected less frequently under upcoming changes. New proposals suggest food waste would continue to be collected weekly, recycling every two weeks, and general waste once every three weeks.
The plans, set for discussion on Tuesday, also include potential closures of privately-operated recycling centres at Purton and Lower Compton, while a new facility might open in North Wiltshire. Additionally, each household would receive a new food waste caddy.
The council aims to raise its recycling rate from just over 40% to more than 60% and reduce landfill waste from roughly 13% down to 3%.
Wiltshire Council leader Ian Thorn explained that kerbside collection and materials sorting contracts would be transferred to local authority trading companies (LATCOs), allowing any profits to be reinvested into the waste management system. He noted that less frequent collection of general waste has been shown to encourage higher recycling rates.
Councillor Paul Sample commented, "These changes are designed to create a sustainable waste service for the future. We aim to lower carbon emissions, save taxpayers' money, and make it simpler for residents to act responsibly for the environment."
The council is also considering a gradual implementation of a booking system for recycling centres. This system would help reduce queues, cut emissions, and improve accessibility, particularly in areas where congestion has been a safety concern.
More updates on these proposals and their rollout will be provided as discussions progress.
