Attempt to designate the final pub in the village as a community resource

Andrew Short, a parish councillor in Biddestone, Wiltshire, has submitted an application to register The White Horse Inn as an Asset of Community Value. This designation would require Wiltshire Council to notify the community if the pub's owners ever decided to sell, giving locals a chance to purchase it.

Mr Short emphasized the pub's importance, stating: "The White Horse serves as a key gathering place, and losing it would significantly impact village life."

Over the past 25 years, Biddestone has seen the closure of its village shop, post office, and The Biddestone Arms, which was converted into residential housing. The push to protect The White Horse has gained support from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra). Mike Hamlyn, Camra's North West Wiltshire pubs officer, noted: "As the only pub remaining in the area, The White Horse is an invaluable community resource."

The White Horse is owned by Stonegate Pub Company, which is currently seeking new tenants. The company highlights the pub's potential, describing it as a "traditional village pub with untapped possibilities to attract visitors."

The pub is listed with a weekly rent of 615 and an estimated annual turnover of around 420,000. Stonegate describes it as "a characterful village pub offering heritage, charm, and commercial opportunities. It enjoys loyal local support and could become a destination for food enthusiasts and day-trippers."
