Adam Sandler Reflects on His Early Years in Hollywood at IndieWire Honors

Adam Sandler has had an exceptional year, highlighted by host Vinny Thomas at the IndieWire Honors. The actor received two Emmy nominations, celebrated one of his careers major hits with Happy Gilmore 2, and earned critical acclaim for his performance in Noah Baumbachs touching and humorous Jay Kelly.

During Thursdays ceremony, Sandler accepted the Vanguard Award and shared memories from his early days in Los Angeles.

Awards were never my focus, Sandler said. I have all sorts of Nickelodeon awards at home, but thats not why I came out here. I was just 22 when I moved to L.A., and my life has been wonderful since.

He recounted that just three days after arriving in Los Angeles, he performed at the Improv and was immediately offered a role in a comedy that would later become Going Overboard.

They approached me after the show and asked if I wanted to star in a movie. I said yes. Then they said we shoot on a boat next week. I just went for it, he remembered.

At the time, his roommate Judd Apatow asked if he was nervous, since Sandler had no script or details about the film. Despite that, he completed the six-day shoot alongside emerging talents like Peter Berg, Steven Brill, and Billy Bob Thornton.

We all shared one goal: to do good work, Sandler said. Since then, every movie, standup show, album, and Saturday Night Live appearance has been about giving my best. I just wanted to make the first movie count for those who believed in me, and I carry that same commitment into all my projects. Ive been fortunate in my career, and Ive always worked hard to make things as good as possible.

Sandler emphasized that this dedication continues with his recent work on Jay Kelly.

When Noah Baumbach asked me to join the film, I wanted to give my absolute bestnot to disappoint him, my family, or myself. Jay Kelly is a movie I deeply love. Working with George Clooney and Laura Dern was unforgettable, and Baumbachs dedication to every word made the experience even more meaningful.
