BD Wong Offers Apology for Offensive Post: 'Regrets Very Poor Joke'

Posting humor online can quickly backfire, as BD Wong recently experienced. The Law & Order: SVU actor reacted to a social media post by content creator Mike Holston, who is Black. Mikes post invited followers to identify an animal, allowing only correct answers. The video featured Mike interacting with a binturong.

In a reply that has since been deleted, BD Wong wrote that the animal looked like a Black man, a comment that was widely criticized. BD later acknowledged that his remark was a very bad joke and admitted it was a thoughtless and offensive response. He expressed genuine remorse for the pain it caused.

Addressing the backlash, BD took to Threads, a social media platform similar to Instagram, to apologize. He stated, its out there & continues to hurt & disappoint & Im really sorry about the hurt part, admitting that it was unwise to respond in that way. He explained that his intention had been to give an intentionally incorrect answer to follow the prompt, but it clearly missed the mark.

He followed up with another post, reaffirming that he takes full responsibility for his comment and again apologized for any harm caused.

For BD, being the target of criticism for a racially insensitive remark is a new experience. He has typically advocated against such behavior. Earlier this year, he publicly criticized the casting of a white actor in a musical originally performed by a Filipino actor. BD has also appeared in Mr. Robot alongside Rami Malek, and recently voiced the character Hon Wing in the animated series Gremlins, which concluded its second season in April.

BD Wongs situation serves as a reminder of the impact of careless social media comments and the importance of taking accountability when harm is caused.
