Netflixs docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning has unveiled startling insights into the relationship between Diddy and The Notorious B.I.G. Following Biggies untimely death on March 9, 1997, Diddy reportedly intended to host an extravagant funeral for the Brooklyn rapper. However, according to Bad Boy co-founder Kirk Burrowes, Diddy allegedly shifted the financial burden onto Biggies estate after seeing the high costs.
Burrowes recalled, Sean said, Were going to have the most monumental funeral for Biggie that New York has ever seen. As the planning progressed and he saw the expenses, he decided, Were going to do the grandest funeral, but Biggies estate will cover it. He added, The spectacle of a big funeral reflected well on Sean, but he wasnt going to reveal that Biggie was footing the bill.
Biggies funeral took place on March 18, 1997, at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel. A procession through Brooklyn drew thousands of grieving fans celebrating Christopher Wallaces life. Attendees included notable figures such as Lil Kim, Lil Cease, and Faith Evans.
Burrowes also made further accusations against Diddy, claiming he pressured changes to Biggies record deal to benefit Bad Boy Records financially. Additionally, Burrowes said Biggie was reluctant to travel to Los Angeles to promote his upcoming Life After Death album amid rising tensions between the East and West Coast scenes. Combs allegedly canceled Biggies planned trip to the U.K., keeping him in L.A. until early March.
Biggie attended the Soul Train Awards on March 7 and was expected to fly to London afterward, but remained in Los Angeles following Combs direction. On the night of March 8, he attended a VIBE party, and in the early hours of March 9, he was fatally shot in a drive-by. Biggie was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at age 24.
The docuseries also features previously unseen footage of the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, shedding light on the tragic events surrounding the rappers death.
