Fred again.., who seldom grants interviews, recently took part in a detailed discussion for Instagrams Ask It Anyway series. The conversation was filmed during a pause in his ongoing USB002 project tour, which spans 10 weeks, 10 songs, and 10 cities. The session served as a mentoring opportunity for young creators, with Fred sharing insights into his creative methods and personal experiences.
Speaking about his current tour, he explained, Im feeling more grounded traveling with my closest friends and performing live. Honestly, I feel very lucky. When asked about balancing songwriting with performing, he said, For me, theres a clear connection: writing leads to touring. I know my priority is creating music. My happiest moments are either alone or with friends, making tunesthats always been my starting point.
Fred highlighted the intensity of his past few years, including impromptu global shows, a 2024 performance at the Los Angeles Coliseum, extensive U.S. touring, and stepping in as a last-minute Coachella 2023 headliner with Skrillex and Four Tet. I aim to protect my mental space so I can make music daily. Everything I do feeds into that, he added, noting that good sleep and exercise have become more important as he ages.
This focus on mental clarity has led to higher creative output. Fred shared, Sometimes, only a tiny fraction of what we write feels ready to release. But with projects like USB, I can freely share tunes without worrying about creating a profound statement. I also have other outlets, like ambient work with Brian Eno.
He reflected on his growth as a musician, stating that between ages 20 to 28, barely anything he made saw the light of day. Now, about 1% of what I produce gets released, which feels great. Creating dailyeven if most ideas are roughhelps me discover what resonates. The thrill is in seeing what sticks and loving the process. Thats the high I chase every day.
Fred offered practical advice for producers, suggesting they stick to a minimal setup: Commit to two synths and five plugins for the next few years. It saves mental energy and prevents endless comparisons. Focus on finishing the music. He also recommended sharing ideas with a trusted circle, explaining, I have a WhatsApp group of four. They arent all musicians, but their feedback is invaluable. Take the criticism that resonates and ignore the rest.
On resilience, Fred recounted sending an early email to Four Tet that went unanswered. I managed to get his email and reached out, even suggesting a casual meet-up. Years later, we connected, and he loves that original email, he recalled. He emphasized, Building resilience allows you to keep creating without taking rejection personally. Missed opportunities arent about youtheyre just part of the process.
The full interview provides an in-depth look at Fred again..s approach to music, collaboration, and maintaining balance while navigating a demanding career.
