Joel Edgerton Responds to James Cameron's Dispute Over Netflix Deal

Joel Edgerton has publicly disagreed with James Camerons recent statements regarding Netflixs potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Speaking about his latest project with Netflix, Edgerton challenged Camerons perspective, highlighting the value streaming platforms bring to both filmmakers and audiences.

During the Gotham Awards, Edgerton addressed Camerons assertion that Netflixs involvement in theatrical releases and awards recognition is problematic. He emphasized, We shouldnt be bickering over what deserves recognition or visibility some creators only gain exposure thanks to streaming services. He added, I dont see anything as inherently inferior.

Cameron had previously criticized Netflix on The Town podcast with Matt Belloni, insisting that films need a substantial theatrical run to be considered for Oscars. He stated, Movies are meant to be experienced in theaters, and the Academy Awards hold no weight for me without that.

Regarding Netflixs rumored acquisition of Warner Bros., Cameron called the deal a disaster, suggesting that Paramount would be a better fit. He also criticized Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos stance that theatrical releases are becoming obsolete, describing Netflixs promise to expand its theatrical offerings as misleading.
