Molly McNearney Criticizes Trump for Being 'Thin-Skinned' Amid Husband Jimmy Kimmel's Suspension: 'Critical Moment for Freedom'

Molly McNearney, executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and spouse of the host, sharply criticized former President Donald Trump as "thin-skinned" during a keynote speech this week.

On Wednesday, December 3, McNearney spoke at The Hollywood Reporters Women in Entertainment Breakfast, addressing the impact of political pressure on comedy and freedom of expression. "We lose our freedom when fear and distraction take hold. Ive felt both deeply," she admitted.

Reflecting on a moment when she realized the fragility of free speech, McNearney recalled the temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September. She confessed she had once taken the First Amendment for granted before the six-day hiatus following comments her husband made about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. "Freedom is something I assumed would always be there, but it can disappear just like other parts of life we take for granted," she remarked.

She also drew parallels with the Supreme Courts 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, noting that threats to rights are recurring. "Seeing my colleagues and the man I love put on suspension because of a presidents thin skin was a stark reminder that our liberties are not guaranteed," McNearney said. "This is a fragile time for freedom."

In a mix of humor and serious reflection, she likened the fight for freedom to the challenges of perimenopause. "If anything, the passion and determination sparked by these challenges can help reclaim our freedoms," she explained.

McNearney praised the courage of those in media and activism, highlighting how bravery can counter fear. "Ive watched my husband, colleagues, and others stand up to leadership without fear, repeatedly defending truth and accountability," she said.

She also discussed the personal toll of political backlash. "Trump and the media machinery that distorts our words have repeatedly threatened my husband, our livelihood, and our friends. Yet, with support from many of you, we recovered," she added.

During the event, Kimmel introduced McNearney with humor, noting her role in challenging limits on his speech. The temporary suspension of the show followed Kimmels comments about Kirk on September 16, with the show returning to air on September 23 after discussions with Disney executives. Kimmel has since described the episode as a misrepresentation by certain media outlets.

McNearney and Kimmel, married since July 2013, have two children together and have navigated family tensions related to their public stance against Trump. She emphasized the personal impact of political divisions, stating that familial disagreements often stem from differing support for the former president.
