This past summer, after finishing Season 1 of The Pitt, my mom persuaded me to try one of her all-time favorite shows, ER. We started with the pilot, and now, midway through Season 2, Im completely engrossed. Here are the 21 moments that stood out to me as a newcomer (latest episode watched: Season 2, Episode 13):
- Mark Greenes misdiagnosis in "Love's Labor Lost" is a masterclass in emotional storytelling. The tension, pacing, and raw emotion make it unforgettable.
- The pilot episode was a shocking opener. Carols overdose set the tone for her character arc and instantly conveyed the high stakes of the ER environment.
- After breaking off her wedding, Carol and her friends enjoy the reception without Tag. This lighthearted ending to Season 1 highlights camaraderie outside the hospital.
- John Carter with a surgical mask is comedic gold. Noah Wyles expressions elevate even the simplest visual gags.
- Carols over-the-top holiday antics in "A Miracle Happens Here" were both absurd and heartwarming, culminating in a hilariously awkward group rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas."
- The scene where Carter yells at Benton by accident had me laughing uncontrollably. The timing and surprise of Carters reaction are perfect.
- Little Susies abandonment was devastating, and Dr. Susan Lewiss gradual emotional breakdown was heartbreakingly portrayed.
- Deb walking away after a major mistake was a standout moment. It highlighted that not everyone is cut out for medicine, no matter their skill or ambition.
- George Clooneys Dr. Doug Ross saves a child from drowning in "Hell and High Water," demonstrating heroism under pressure and a deep commitment to his patients.
- Carols kindness toward Josh, an unhoused patient with schizophrenia, was profoundly moving and showed a compassionate, nuanced depiction of mental illness.
- Benton grieving quietly after his mother Maes death was a subtle, deeply emotional scene, emphasizing the human side of doctors behind their professional facade.
- The Season 1 Christmas episode, "The Gift," was memorable for Benton delivering organs to those in need, showing his caring nature beyond his career ambitions.
- Carol solemnly declaring a patients earthworms dead despite her efforts highlighted the shows occasional delightfully absurd humor.
- The friendship between Mark and Doug is a highlight, combining camaraderie, tension, and mutual loyalty that enhances the shows relational depth.
- A quirky subplot involves ER staff sneaking into another floor to reclaim crash carts, with Dougs flirting adding comedic charm to the mini-heist.
- Sheps awkward attempt to deny racism to Malik felt realistic and thought-provoking, illustrating the shows willingness to tackle complex social issues.
- ER is full of before they were famous guest appearances, including Lucy Liu, Jake Lloyd, and Bradley Whitford, making the show fun to watch with hindsight.
- Susans conflicted approach to Little Susies adoption was compelling and rare for '90s TV, offering an honest look at emotional dilemmas.
- Marks marital struggles were handled gradually, with a particularly poignant moment when he informs his daughter he wont live with her anymore.
- The Do Not Resuscitate storyline in Season 2, Episode "True Lies," was intense and horrifying, showing the human cost of medical and ethical decisions.
- Finally, the Benton Punch in the intro captures a rare emotional release from a character who usually keeps his feelings contained.
ER is available to stream in full on HBO Max, and these 21 moments only scratch the surface of why this show has endured as a classic.
