Netflix explains changes to movie theater approach post Warner Bros. acquisition.

Even after acquiring Warner Bros., Netflix plans to keep its theatrical releases brief. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized that the company will continue prioritizing streaming over extended exclusive theater runs. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. itself will maintain longer theater stays for its films.

The deal, which brings the legendary Warner Bros. studio under Netflixs umbrella, sparked questions about whether Netflix would start offering longer exclusive theatrical windows. Sarandos was clear: the company will not adopt that approach. Netflix intends to release Warner Bros. movies in theaters but stick to its signature short-run strategy.

During an investor call discussing the acquisition, Sarandos explained that Netflix is not opposed to cinemas but finds prolonged exclusive theater windows inconvenient for viewers. He suggested that, over time, these windows may shrink further as audiences increasingly consume content via streaming platforms.

This strategy has occasionally caused friction with prominent talent seeking the traditional big-screen exposure and prestige. However, Netflix has no plans to alter its distribution model. Sarandos also confirmed that, unlike Warner Bros., Netflix will not license its content to third-party media companies. Warner Bros. will continue producing for other outlets, a practice Netflix intends to leave unchanged.

In summary, Netflixs acquisition of Warner Bros. secures the studio and HBO assets, but the company remains committed to the streaming-focused approach that has defined its success.
