A new limited documentary series, co-produced by Sean "Diddy" Combs' long-time adversary and director Alexandria Stapleton, offers an in-depth look at the music mogul just days before his federal indictment on charges including racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
The opening scenes feature shaky footage of Combs in his New York City hotel room, speaking on the phone with his attorney Marc Agnifilo. This footage, described by Combs team as "illegal" and unauthorized, was reportedly filmed by a videographer hired by Combs himself during the investigation. The filmmakers claim to have obtained the material following Combs arrest on September 16, 2024.
In the documentary, Combs is seen expressing frustration over the mounting lawsuits and federal investigation, stating he wants to "fight for his life." While Agnifilo suggests that the absence of an indictment or arrest is somewhat encouraging, Combs criticizes his legal teams communication and strategy.
We have to find someone who can work with us, someone familiar with the harsh realities of media and propaganda, Combs tells Agnifilo. Im taking eight nuclear bombs straight to the head. Im tired of going back and forth Were losing.
Some footage captures federal agents on a nearby rooftop, while other segments feature media appearances and interviews with former Bad Boy artists Kalenna Harper and Aubrey ODay, singer Al B. Sure!, former security guard Roger Bonds, ex-assistant and prosecution witness Capricorn Clark, Juror 160 from the federal trial, and Bad Boy cofounder Kirk Burrowes, who currently has a civil case against Combs.
Clark comments, Hes always creating a narrative. Hes the best storyteller in hip-hop. He thinks hes Black Superman. I can do what I want! Meanwhile, Juror 160 says the jurys verdict is "not everything the media has made it out to be."
Combs was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, the least severe of his charges, and sentenced to slightly over four years in prison. In November, his release date was delayed from May 8, 2028, to June 4, 2028, after reports surfaced alleging he had produced and consumed alcohol in prison, which his representatives denied.
Combs team has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Netflix over the use of the previously unseen footage, describing the documentary as misleading and a deliberate attack on Combs reputation by 50 Cent. They argue that the portrayal is biased and prevents an objective view of his life and legacy. USA TODAY has reached out to Netflix for comment.
