NEW YORK (AP) Tekashi 6ix9ine, the rapper from Brooklyn, was handed an additional three months in prison on Friday for breaching the conditions of his supervised release in a New York gang-related case. This violation stems from an assault on an individual and drug possession. The 29-year-old artist, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, admitted to the offenses during a federal court hearing in Manhattan. Judge Paul Engelmayer voiced his frustration with Hernandez's repeated legal troubles.
Earlier, Hernandez received a 45-day sentence for violating supervised release terms late last year. The judge, addressing Hernandez, remarked, From time to time your actions suggest that you believe that ordinary rules dont apply to you, emphasizing that another prison sentence was necessary to convey a clear message.
Hernandez, who gained fame in 2017 with his track Gummo, spoke at length in court, recounting several incidents where he and his family faced threats and intimidation due to his cooperation with authorities in the gang investigation. Unidentified individuals left a coffin in front of my house with an animal inside as a warning, he explained. Three masked gunmen held my mother at gunpoint.
In 2018, Hernandez pleaded guilty to his involvement with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, a violent gang based in New York. As a result of his cooperation in the racketeering case against gang members, he was given a reduced sentence of two years in prison in 2019, followed by five years of supervised release. Hernandez was also released early from federal prison in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The latest sentence stems from a police raid on Hernandez's Miami residence in March, which uncovered small quantities of cocaine and ecstasy, as well as an incident in August when he punched a man at a Florida mall who had taunted him for his testimony against gang members. His legal team had requested that he serve six months of home confinement instead of additional prison time.
