Former Honduran President Convicted of Drug Trafficking Released by US

Juan Orlando Hernndez, the former president of Honduras who was found guilty in the United States for participating in extensive drug trafficking, has been released from prison, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. His freedom comes after a pardon granted by US President Donald Trump and has been covered by multiple American news outlets.

Hernndez held the presidency of Honduras from 2014 to 2022. Shortly after leaving office, he was extradited to the United States, where he was convicted for assisting drug traffickers, including ex-Mexican cartel leader Joaqun "El Chapo" Guzmn, in transporting hundreds of thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the country.

Hernndezs wife expressed her gratitude toward Trump on social media platform X, sharing her joy over her husbands release after nearly four years behind bars.

Originally, Hernndez had been sentenced to 45 years in prison. The US Department of Justice stated that he exploited his presidential powers to facilitate one of the largest and most violent drug trafficking networks worldwide.

When questioned about the reasoning behind releasing a convicted drug trafficker while the US administration was scrutinizing Venezuela for alleged involvement in drug operations, the White House commented that Hernndez had been treated unjustly under the Biden administration.
