Revival of a Massive Horror Franchise from the 2000s

It seems that profitable horror franchises never truly vanish. A prime example: "Paranormal Activity" is returning to theaters. The original 2009 found-footage hit became an unexpected cinematic success, sparking a seven-film series. Now, an eighth installment is in development, with a prominent horror filmmaker joining the project.

Variety reports that James Wan, known for "The Conjuring" and "Saw," is producing the untitled new "Paranormal Activity" film through his Atomic Monster company, alongside Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions. Paramount Pictures will handle its release. Details about the plot are currently undisclosed, and no director or writer has been confirmed, but the project is prioritized for development by all involved.

Wan commented: "I've always admired the original 'Paranormal Activity' for its slow-building tension and uncanny ability to make the unseen terrifying. I'm excited to expand its legacy and guide the next stage of this iconic found-footage horror series."

So far, the franchise has grossed nearly $900 million worldwide on a minimal budget. The first film, created with just $15,000 (before reshoots), became the most profitable horror movie ever. Wans experience with massive franchises like The Conjuring Universe makes him a natural fit for reviving the series.

Jason Blum added: "Working with James on this revival, which launched Blumhouse, is exactly what we hoped for when merging with Atomic Monster. Ill be closely involved in shaping this new chapter. While our budget is higher than the original $15,000, one thing will remain: dont watch it alone."

The last entry, 2021s "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," was released directly to Paramount+ with minimal attention. Despite earlier comments downplaying the franchise, Blumhouses recent box office struggles have made returning to a proven property appealing. Wans involvement, combined with the merger of Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, provides fresh energy for the series.

James Wan, who created "Saw," "Insidious," and "The Conjuring," and directed blockbusters like "Aquaman" and "Furious 7," has also produced hits including "M3GAN" and "Lights Out." His track record suggests the franchise could regain its former success.

The new "Paranormal Activity" film currently has no release date, but fans can expect updates soon.
