Richard Gere has spoken out about his two-decade ban from the Oscars, following a moment at the live ceremony where he addressed political issues. The 76-year-old actor, widely recognized for his human rights advocacy, revealed he was not bothered by the backlash from his 1993 speech criticizing Chinas treatment of Tibet.
I didnt take it personally, Gere told Variety. I didnt see any villains in the situation. I act according to my principles and I never intend to harm anyone. My focus is on addressing injustice, not creating anger or division.
Gere explained that his activism is deeply influenced by the Dalai Lama, a longtime friend and the focus of a recent 2025 documentary he helped produce. He noted that he never discussed the controversial Oscars moment with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. My aim is to combat human rights violations while remaining true to the perspective of His Holiness, who believes in redemption for everyone, Gere said. So, I dont take the situation personally.
At the 1993 Oscars, Gere was set to announce the nominees for Best Art Direction, but instead used his time on stage to speak against Chinas restrictions on Tibet, stating, If something miraculous could happen, where love and truth reach Beijing, perhaps people in Tibet could live freely again. His remarks received applause from the audience but drew the ire of the Academy.
Producer Gil Cates criticized Geres unscripted commentary, calling it arrogant and stating he would not invite Gere back. Cates also disapproved of presenters Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, who had similarly highlighted social issues during their appearances. Using the stage to voice personal political beliefs is inappropriate, Cates said at the time.
Due to this incident, Gere was prohibited from presenting at the Oscars for 20 years and remained banned from China. He eventually returned to the Academy Awards stage in 2013.
