With the release of Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5, fans quickly noticed the transformation of Gaten Matarazzo's character, Dustin. Its clear that Dustin has not yet overcome the grief of losing Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) in Season 4, and he continues to honor Eddies memory through his new appearance. Behind the scenes, the show's hair department played a significant role in ensuring Dustins look reflects this emotional journey.
How the Hair Department Crafted Dustins New Look
In the latest season, Dustin is determined to keep Eddies legacy alive, including maintaining the Hellfire Club at Hawkins High despite pressure from the popular crowd. His appearance also takes on a new style, with Dustin sporting a Hellfire Club t-shirt and a mullet that closely resembles Eddie's signature hairstyle.
The transformation of Dustin's look was a conscious effort by the hair team, led by Sarah Hindsgaul. She explained in an interview with TV Insider that this change was one of her first priorities for the season. "I wanted to get as close to Eddies look as possible, but still incorporate Dustins distinctive curl," said Hindsgaul. "We wanted to honor Eddie, but keep it true to Dustins character, giving him a style that reflects what he would choose to look like as a tribute to Eddie."
Despite facing criticism for his altered appearance, Dustin remains resolute in his dedication to Eddie. Hindsgaul noted, Its a beautiful way for him to keep Eddies spirit alive. Its his way of reminding everyone that Eddie is still with us. She continued, Its heartbreaking, but also incredibly meaningful.
More Than Just a Physical Change
Of course, Dustin's transformation goes beyond just his hairstyle. The impact of Eddie's death has left a deep mark on him, and his personality has noticeably shifted. Gaten Matarazzos portrayal of this change has been particularly striking. Sarah Hindsgaul shared, I noticed how Gaten adjusted his walk and overall demeanor on set. It all came together perfectly when I saw him walking down the hallway. It felt like everything was falling into place.
As the story progresses in the remaining episodes of Season 5, it will be fascinating to see how Dustins emotional journey continues to unfold. His tribute to Eddie is just one of the many layers of his characters evolution in this final season.
