‘The View’: John Slattery Criticizes ‘Mad Men’ HBO Max Mishap as ‘Unfavorable’

John Slattery addressed the recent HBO Max mishap involving the classic series Mad Men. He appeared on The View on Friday, December 5 (taped the previous day), to discuss his new historical thriller Nuremberg. During the interview, cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin asked about a viral error in the streaming release of the acclaimed AMC drama.

The series was added to HBO Max on December 1 with its first 4K remaster. Fans quickly spotted a noticeable mistake in Season 1, Episode 7, titled Red in the Face. In the scene, Slatterys character, Roger Sterling, vomits after overindulging in oysters and vodka served by Don Draper (Jon Hamm). Viewers noticed that behind him, the visual effects crew operating the mechanical setup for the scene was visible. This slip likely occurred during the 4K conversion, when post-production edits to remove the crew were apparently overlooked.

Griffin commented, I loved you in Mad Men. Its been 10 years since the show aired, but now its remastered on HBO Max. There was a moment that went viral where your character vomits, but you can actually see some of the crew and what seems to be a vomit machine. I had no idea that existed on set.

Sunny Hostin reacted with surprise, A machine? Slattery joked, I thought it was just me! He went on to clarify, Those gentlemen in the background were from an external FX company specializing in effects like this. They had a hose that went behind my ear and up my body. At the right moment, theyd count down, and the effect would happen.

Ana Navarro asked for more details while pointing to a still from the scene, and Slattery explained, They attached a hose discreetly, away from the camera, and triggered it on cue. Its quite a process. Joy Behar quipped, Well, it ruins every vomit scene now.

Slattery added, This happened because of the 4K remaster. Apparently, no one checked the final version before it went live. Sara Haines acknowledged the crews visibility, noting Slatterys support of them. Yeah, not a great look, he admitted regarding the streaming error.
