Watch Dua Lipa Honor Selena with 'Amor Prohibido' Cover in Mexico City

Dua Lipa paid homage to Selena during the final show of her Radical Optimism World Tour in Mexico City on Friday. Throughout her international tour, Lipa has surprised audiences with local song covers, a tradition she continued in Latin America with performances in Spanish and Portuguese.

The tour wrapped up after nearly nine months at Estadio GNP Seguros, where Lipa delivered a heartfelt rendition of Selenas iconic hit, Amor Prohibido. Speaking in Spanish, Lipa explained, I chose this song because I feel a very special connection with this artist and with her sense of belonging to two places at once. I relate to that deeply, being both Albanian and English, just as she was Mexican and American.

Performing in Spanish has been a challenge for Lipa, who admitted, Its very nerve-wracking! When singing in different languages, I constantly practiced the lyrics, intonations, and accents to get everything right.

Since launching the Radical Optimism tour in Australia in March 2025, Lipa has made it a point to perform a song connected to each city or country she visits. In the U.S., she highlighted local artists, while internationally, she leaned into classic hits from the region. Some performances included special guest appearances, featuring artists such as Gwen Stefani, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Lionel Richie.

Lipa revealed that the idea of performing surprise covers originated from a collaboration with Chris Stapleton at the American Country Music Awards. It was so much fun that I suggested to the band and the team that we do a different song every night. Everyone thought it was ambitious, but we went for it, she said.
