What is misophonia? Actress from 'Mad Men' says she suffers from this sound disorder

January Jones has opened up about a lifelong struggle with a little-known condition called misophonia. The Emmy-nominated actress, best known for her role in "Mad Men," discussed her experience in a Dec. 4 Instagram video, revealing how the disorder affects her daily life.

"I want to talk about something I've dealt with my whole life, called misophonia, and it has become more challenging over the years," said Jones, 47. She humorously described a situation with her brother-in-law, whose habit of constantly eating chips triggers her condition. "I've spoken to him about it many times, but he finds it amusing to eat chips around me. It feels unkind and, frankly, a bit risky for him," she added.

Misophonia, also known as selective sound sensitivity syndrome, is characterized by a heightened emotional reaction to specific sounds. According to the Cleveland Clinic, common triggers include loud chewing, lip-smacking, heavy breathing, clock ticking, and repetitive tapping. Those affected may experience intense feelings of anger, anxiety, or disgust when exposed to these sounds. In severe cases, it can limit activities or make certain environments unbearable.

Despite her irritation, Jones reassured her followers that there is no animosity toward her brother-in-law. "He's actually a very nice person. Today happens to be his birthday, so happy birthdayI hope you enjoy your chips," she joked.

Misophonia has gained attention as more celebrities share their personal health challenges, including Selma Blair, Jada Pinkett Smith, Selena Gomez, and Justin Bieber. By speaking out, these public figures encourage awareness and understanding of conditions that are often invisible but profoundly affect daily life.
