Why Hugh Jackman advocated for hometown Milwaukee premiere of 'Song Sung Blue'

Hugh Jackman fully embraced Milwaukee during the hometown debut of Song Sung Blue. The 57-year-old actor, alongside director Craig Brewer, attended the event on Tuesday, Dec. 2, celebrating the story of real-life Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina (played by Kate Hudson), who performed in the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s.

The Sardina family attended the premiere with their daughter Rachel Cartwright, portrayed by Ella Anderson (The Glass Castle). Before the screening, Jackman and Brewer joined the family for a 12-minute introduction. Jackman described the film as "an incredible story celebrating Milwaukee, Neil Diamond, and the power of family and love." He added, "This is the kind of movie I want to be a part of and the kind of story the world needs. After five years of effort, tonight is the most significant moment so far."

During the opening remarks, the filmmakers presented Claire Sardina with a commemorative bench engraved for Lightning & Thunder. The bench will be permanently placed at the Wisconsin State Fair, a meaningful location where the band frequently performed and where the couple got married. The theater was filled with family, longtime friends, and fans, including documentary director Greg Kohs, who celebrated the moment with enthusiastic applause. Claire Sardina honored her late husband Mike, who passed away in 2006, with a heartfelt call to the audience: "Do you think Lightning is here tonight? I love you, honey. I love you."

Prior to the premiere, Jackman shared his excitement on Instagram, donning a Cheesehead hat. "First time in Milwaukee and I am thrilled," he said, noting humorously that he had waited 57 years to wear one. Jackman and Brewer also visited the iconic Kopps Frozen Custard, serving fans a limited edition flavor named Song Sun Blueberry custard.

Speaking on the blue carpet, Brewer emphasized that Jackman was insistent on holding the premiere in Milwaukee. "Hugh made it clear from the start: this had to return to Milwaukee. It's a story rooted in the city, and one that many people arent aware of," Brewer explained. Jackman envisioned the event as a legendary celebration, cementing Lightning & Thunder's place in Milwaukee lore.

Song Sung Blue, inspired by the 2008 documentary of the same name, is set to open in theaters on Dec. 25, following its Hollywood premiere in October.
