Why Johnny Galecki from The Big Bang Theory's Lines Were Cut from a 2008 Superhero Movie

Johnny Galecki, known for portraying Leonard Hofstadter on "The Big Bang Theory," shares a passion for comic books and superhero stories. Interestingly, Galecki also appeared in a 2008 superhero filmnot "Iron Man" or "The Dark Knight," but Peter Bergs Hancock, starring Will Smith as the troubled, amnesiac hero John Hancock.

Unlike Smiths prominent role, Galeckis character, Jeremy, had a minimal presence in the film. His dialogue was removed before filming, leaving him with almost no lines. Speaking to The A.V. Club in 2010, Galecki recalled auditioning alongside Thomas Lennon, who was cast as Mike. They were originally scheduled to share several scenes, but the plan changed once they were hired.

I think Im fourth-billed in that movieWill Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, and me, Galecki said. Yet Im essentially an extra. Thomas and I had no idea until we saw the revised script on set.

Galecki accepted the role primarily to work with director Peter Berg, achieving that goal despite the disappointment of having his lines cut. I was disappointed, he admitted. I would have loved a bigger part, but thats just how things turned out.

Despite mixed critical reviews, Hancock earned nearly $630 million worldwide, ranking among the most successful non-Marvel and non-DC superhero films. Its financial success suggested a sequel, though progress has been slow. In February 2025, Will Smith mentioned on Twitch that theres a compelling idea for Hancock 2 and that Zendaya is being considered for a role.

It remains uncertain which original cast members might return. Galecki, who largely stepped back from Hollywood after "The Big Bang Theory," could have a chance to reunite with Berg. Now a more established actor, he would likely receive a more substantial role than in the first film, leaving the door open for a potential comeback in the franchise.
