Netflix has announced the acquisition of Hollywood powerhouse Warner Bros for nearly $82.7 billion, following the separation of Warner's Discovery Global division. This has sparked questions about the future of HBO Max, the premium streaming service known for hits like "The Wire," "The Sopranos," and "Succession."
Currently, Netflix has not confirmed any plans to merge HBO Max with its own platform. The deal is expected to take 12 to 18 months to finalize, leaving the integration details uncertain.
However, Netflix confirmed that subscribers will gain access to Warner Bros and HBO content, including blockbuster franchises and popular series such as "Batman," "Superman," "The Last of Us," and "Game of Thrones." The streaming giant emphasized that combining its library with HBO and Warner Bros offerings will expand high-quality viewing choices for its members.
Netflix also noted that access to HBO's content could improve its service by enhancing viewing options and broadening content availability. It's possible that HBO and Netflix could maintain separate brand identities while allowing users to access both services through a single platform, similar to existing discounted bundle options like Disney, Hulu, and HBO Max.
The acquisition also includes Warner Bros film and television studios. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos highlighted the potential of merging iconic titles such as "Casablanca," "Citizen Kane," "Harry Potter," and "Friends" with Netflix originals like "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game" to create a more expansive entertainment experience.
Warner Bros entered the sale process in October after multiple takeover offers. The deal covers Warner Bros studios, HBO Max, and several TV channels, although Netflix is reportedly focused mainly on production and streaming assets. Warner had planned to spin off the TV channels into a separate entity regardless.
This acquisition could also signal Netflixs entry into theatrical releases, an area it has largely avoided in favor of streaming. By bringing Warner Bros and HBO Max under its umbrella, Netflix is poised to control two of the largest streaming platforms and significantly expand its influence in the entertainment industry.
