A 28-year-old woman has shared her dilemma over holiday plans, torn between spending time with her mother and avoiding her "toxic" older sister. She sought guidance from Reddit to navigate the tricky situation.
The woman explained that her 38-year-old sister has a history of creating conflict, prompting some family members to maintain low or no contact with her. "She has been extremely toxic over the years, causing a lot of family chaos," the woman wrote. "Growing up, Christmas was my least favorite holiday because she would always find a way to ruin itcomplaining about gifts, cancelling last minute, or stirring up drama."
She added that her parents remain the only family members still in regular contact with the older sister. One of her other sisters has chosen to skip the holiday gathering this year to avoid potential conflict, leaving the woman unsure about attending.
"My mom seems hurt that I dont want to come and has been guilt-tripping me a bit," she shared. "She said, She will behave, I already talked to her about that. But the fact that such a conversation had to happen makes me uneasy. If someone has to be told to 'behave' before a family holiday, I doubt the gathering will be peaceful."
She noted that she missed last year's Christmas celebration as well due to her sister's presence and scheduling conflicts with her boyfriend. "This upset my mom, but the situation feels more complicated this year because my younger sister isnt attending," she explained. "Now Im torn between protecting my peace and disappointing my mom. AITA if I dont go?"
Reddit users responded with advice emphasizing the importance of boundaries. One commenter noted, "Sometimes disappointing your parents is necessary to maintain your own well-being." Others suggested prioritizing personal happiness over attending a potentially stressful gathering, with one advising, "Don't go and tell your mom your happiness is important. Find another day to celebrate with her alone, but avoid the celebration if your sister is there."
