Improving Safety for Walking and Cycling Across Town

Swindon Borough Council has opened a public consultation on a new initiative aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the area. The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan outlines 25 projects designed to make active travel easier and more appealing throughout the borough.

Key elements of the plan include the development of a Northern Flyer cycle route, connecting the town centre with Tadpole Garden Village and several new housing areas in North Swindon. This route is intended to encourage more people to choose cycling or walking for everyday journeys.

Cabinet member for environment and transport, Councillor Chris Watts, said, "By focusing on walking and cycling, we hope to make active travel the preferred choice, reducing carbon emissions, promoting healthier lifestyles, and strengthening community connections."

Additional proposals involve extending the Southern Flyer route from Farnsby Street to the newly completed cycle paths along Fleming Way and Holbrook Way. The updated plan aligns with Swindon's long-term goals under the Local Transport Plan and the boroughs new decarbonisation framework, which is scheduled for cabinet review this Wednesday.

Mr. Watts added, "We welcome input from anyone interested in walking or cycling. This consultation offers residents an opportunity to influence the future design of the networks they rely on for travel, exercise, or recreation. We are committed to listening and will act as soon as funding is available."

The consultation will remain open for 13 weeks, closing on 20 February 2026. Residents and community partners can submit feedback and propose new ideas through an online survey.
