Alanis Morissette Performs Stripped Down Version of ‘You Oughta Know’ for MGM+’s ‘Words + Music’

Alanis Morissette has been performing her iconic song You Oughta Know for three decades, yet the track continues to exemplify her distinctive artistry. The singer-songwriter appears in the MGM+ documentary series Words + Music, delivering a haunting live version of the hit from Jagged Little Pill while reflecting on the 30 years since its release.

In the episode, set to air on December 21, Morissette is accompanied by three musicians, creating a minimalistic backdrop for her powerful vocals. Behind them, the screen showcases a montage of images from her career, including energetic festival performances and intimate concert moments.

The full performance will include both her classic hits and new material, framed by her thoughts on healing, anger, and the creative process.

Words + Music brings the audio series, launched by Audible in 2021, to a visual format. Gunpowder & Sky CEO Van Toffler stated, Musicians express what we mere mortals think and feel, but they do it betterand with a melody. Adapting Words + Music for video allowed our studio and producing partners Alex Coletti and Bill Flanagan to combine lyrics, music, performance, and visual art. The result is as intimate as a backstage confession and as cinematic as a feature film. These arent just stories about iconic songs theyre portraits of how the songs and the artists behind them came to be.

Morissettes episode follows earlier installments featuring John Legend, Sheryl Crow, and Elvis Costello. The series, which premiered on November 30, presents artists sharing stories behind pivotal songs in their careers, followed by fresh performances either solo or with a band.

New episodes premiere Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on MGM+.
