Critics declare Paddington's West End musical a hit

The stage adaptation of Paddington has earned widespread praise from reviewers following its premiere in Londons West End. Paddington the Musical, featuring original songs by McFlys Tom Fletcher, follows the beloved bear as he arrives in London and is welcomed by the Brown family.

The Guardian awarded the production five stars, describing it as "imaginatively staged, impeccably performed, and utterly delightful." Meanwhile, The Telegraph called it a "charming, feel-good musical for families, destined to enjoy a long run." The Times gave it four stars, noting, "Break open the marmalade: the West End has a new hit musical that could rival Matilda as a favourite among children."

Written by Jessica Swale and directed by Luke Sheppard, the musical is based on the 2014 film and Michael Bond's original books. Critics highlighted the innovative approach to bringing Paddington to life on stage, a character previously animated on screen. As Time Out's Andrzej Lukowski explained, "Paddington is portrayed by a small woman in a bear costume, while a man controls the voice and facial expressions from backstage, creating a convincing presence that makes the character feel real in the room."

Financial Times critic Sarah Hemming added, "The bear is gorgeously brought to life, with a design that balances fur and realism, making him both endearing and believable."

The musical, in development for over five years, is scheduled to run at the Savoy Theatre until October 2026. The cast includes West End veteran Bonnie Langford, along with performer and television panelist Brenda Edwards.

The Independent praised the production's heart and spectacle: "At a time when the West End is filled with underfunded adaptations of popular franchises, this show stands out for its dedication and impressive special effects. It's eager to please, and the magic is palpable."

While critics largely celebrated the show, some noted minor flaws. Sam Marlowe from The Stage commented, "The material could use refinement, but the heart of the show Paddington himself is irresistible." Similarly, Dominic Cavendish of The Telegraph remarked, "Not quite a new classic, and slightly overstuffed with songs, yet it remains a delightful addition to the British musical repertoire." The Guardian's Arifa Akbar added that the final scenes felt slightly excessive but praised the overall world of adventure.

Audience immersion is a key feature, especially for those in the stalls, with interactive moments that include surprises from the stage. Olivia Garrett of Radio Times highlighted a memorable second-act number celebrating Paddington's favourite treat, marmalade, describing it as a visually stunning and engaging sequence involving both performers and the crowd.

City AM's Adam Bloodworth concluded that the musical succeeds as "a wholesome, analogue experience," maintained by strong writing, a cohesive ensemble, and enjoyable songs without relying on gimmicks or viral moments.

The production captures the charm and warmth of Paddingtons world, delivering a family-friendly experience that resonates with both children and adults alike.
