During her Short n Sweet tour, Sabrina Carpenter, the Grammy-winning artist, delighted audiences with a playful routine in which she would "arrest" a member of the crowd during her performance of Juno. This could be a fan or even a celebrity, and the sight of fuzzy pink handcuffs being tossed toward the chosen Juno girl became a beloved highlight of the shows. Carpenter would tease the audience, singing, Wanna try out some freaky positions? Have you ever tried this one?
The tour wrapped up in November after more than 70 performances, but recently, the Trump administration has repurposed Carpenters hit track for political content. On Monday, the White House used Juno as the soundtrack for a TikTok video showing a protest against ICE raids, followed by clips of ICE agents detaining undocumented immigrants. The video caption quoted Carpenters lyrics: Have you ever tried this one? Bye-bye.
At this time, it is unclear whether the White House obtained permission to use Carpenters music. Neither representatives for Carpenter nor the White House responded to requests for comment.
This is not the first instance of the Trump administration using pop music in political messaging without artists approval. Last month, Olivia Rodrigo publicly criticized the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for using her song All-American Bitch in a video about self-deportation. She condemned the use of her work for what she described as racist, hateful propaganda.
Similarly, Taylor Swifts track The Fate of Ophelia was featured in a White House montage depicting Trump alongside military imagery and a reference to The Fate of America. Swift, who has been openly critical of Trump and supported Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024, did not respond to requests for comment regarding the video.
Throughout Trumps campaigns, several artists, including Cline Dion and the family of Isaac Hayes, publicly objected to the unauthorized use of their music, sometimes sending legal notices to stop the practice.
