Alleged perpetrator of January 6 pipe bombing appears in court for the first time

A man from Virginia accused of placing pipe bombs near the headquarters of both major political parties ahead of the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol appeared in court on Friday for the first time. Brian Cole Jr., from Woodbridge, Virginia, did not enter a plea during his hearing at the district court in Washington.

Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya instructed that Cole, arrested at his home the day before, remain in custody until a detention hearing scheduled for December 12.

Cole, 30, faces charges including transporting an explosive device across state lines and attempting to destroy property with explosives. His arrest marks a significant development in a case that has remained unsolved for nearly five years and fueled numerous far-right conspiracy theories.

At a press briefing on Thursday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi refrained from commenting on possible political motives behind the pipe bombs, noting that the investigation is still active. Reports from CNN and NBC News on Friday indicate that Cole told FBI agents he believed the 2020 presidential election had been "stolen" from Donald Trump.

Joe Biden won the 2020 election, though Trump continues to falsely assert that he was the rightful winner. The pipe bombs, placed outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee offices on the evening of January 5, 2021, did not explode. Authorities discovered the devices the following day as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to obstruct certification of Biden's victory.

Over the years, the FBI released multiple images and video clips showing a masked suspect and raised the reward for information leading to an arrest to $500,000. The delayed resolution of the case led to far-right speculation, including unfounded claims that a US Capitol Police officer could have been involved.
