First court appearance for suspect in Jan. 6 pipe bomb case

The individual charged with leaving two pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack made his first court appearance on Friday. Brian Cole Jr., from Virginia, was taken into custody by federal agents on Thursday following an extensive investigation that lasted nearly five years.

As Cole entered the courtroom and took a seat next to his lawyer, John Shoreman, his family in the gallery visibly reacted with gasps and tears. During the hearing, Coles arms and legs trembled while the judge read his rights and outlined the two charges he faces, each carrying a potential sentence of up to 30 years. Cole did not enter a plea at the hearing.

Prosecutors reported that Cole participated in a four-hour interview with the FBI the day of his arrest. They intend to share a transcript of that interview with his attorneys over the weekend. Law enforcement sources indicate that Cole confessed to placing the bombs, though his precise motivation has not been officially confirmed.

Sources suggest that investigators believe Coles actions were influenced by his belief in alleged irregularities in the 2020 election. Jeanine Pirro, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, stated that Cole expressed disappointment regarding multiple aspects of the election.

The governments legal team informed the court they will request that Cole remain in custody until trial, citing the severity of the charges. A detention hearing has been scheduled for December 15.

As Cole left the courtroom, his family called out words of support, shouting phrases like, "We love you Brian!" and "We're here for you, baby!" Neither Cole nor his attorney made any public comments following the hearing.
