Suspected pipe bomber admits supporting Trump and believing in 2020 election conspiracies, tells FBI

Hours prior to the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, pipe bombs were discovered outside the offices of both the Republican and Democratic parties in Washington, D.C. This sparked a five-year investigation that recently reached a significant development.

Federal authorities apprehended Brian Cole Jr. early Thursday morning. Cole, a Virginia resident living approximately 23 miles from Capitol Hill, faces charges including transporting an explosive device and attempting to maliciously destroy property with explosives, according to court filings.

Details about Cole and his actions are emerging. NBC News reported that he is cooperating with the FBI and has provided valuable information.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Cole admitted to federal agents that he planted the bombs and that he believed in conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 election. He also expressed support for former President Donald Trump.

These new insights clarify that Cole's actions were not linked to support for President Joe Biden or left-leaning causes. They also prompt renewed discussions about the impact of Trumps pardons for individuals involved in the January 6 events who subscribed to false election narratives.

Cole is scheduled to appear in court on Friday afternoon. He has not entered a plea at this time, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
